Little Mermaid Back in Copenhagen

The most famous tourist attraction in Denmark, The Little Mermaid is back in Copenhagen, Denmark after it has been loaned to China and displayed at the Shanghai World Expo 2010. I was in Shanghai last May but I don't have the chance to visit the Expo. The statue was sent to China on the 25th of March and after almost 8 months, it was re-placed at her original position, near Copenhagen Harbour last Saturday 20th of November. It was her first time travelling outside Denmark. Below is a picture of The Little Mermaid. The character "Little Mermaid" was known from the H. C. Andersen fairytale. Happy Ending to Little Mermaid's China adventure

Denmark’s smallest and most popular ambassador, the Little Mermaid, is back from her first trip abroad, after achieving fairy tale success at the Shanghai World Expo 2010.

Hundreds of onlookers cheered and waved Danish flags as the 125 cm tall bronze statue was lowered by crane back onto her perch at Langelinie Quay in Copenhagen Harbour on Saturday afternoon.

Copenhagen resident Jens Mortensen, who was also present to see her off when she left her spot in March, said he was glad she went, but was even happier that she’s back home safely.

“We say ‘ni hao’ to the Little Mermaid. Even though there was opposition to her being loaned out, I think it was very good for the Denmark.”

The loan was part of a cultural exchange between Denmark and China that also saw world-renowned Chinese artist Ai Weiwei create a video installation taking the Little Mermaid’s place. The video installation featured a live broadcast showing the Little Mermaid in Shanghai.
